Here are the coaching skills you need to develop to coach a team for high performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Active listening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Great coaches communicate transparently and demonstrate emotional intelligence. They understand that both <em>what <\/em>they say and <em>how <\/em>they say it makes a huge difference to team mindset and behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coaches also know when to shut up and listen. Active listening is a much more effective coaching skill for leaders than delivering yet another motivational speech (<em>despite what you may see in the movies<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sense, there\u2019s some overlap with counselling. Coaches \u2013 like counsellors \u2013 are good at getting their teams to come up with their solutions to problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don\u2019t impose their ideas. They ask questions and guide people towards conclusions they can believe in. The result? An empowered team, happy to contribute ideas and confidence in their working style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Make time to get to know your team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It may feel like idle office chit-chat, but getting to know who your team are is important.&nbsp;What are their hobbies? Do they have a partner or kids or a pampered pet? What are their long-term life goals?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the time to ask questions about their lives and aspirations. Recognise success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From childhood, everyone <em>loves <\/em>getting praised for a job well done. This desire for appreciation isn\u2019t something that goes away when we master potty training or enter the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees look to their leader for validation \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/mo.work\/insights\/what-is-employee-recognition\/\">recognition<\/a> that tells them they\u2019re on the right track and that they\u2019re valued members of the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinsey\u2019s research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/great-attrition-or-great-attraction-the-choice-is-yours\">feeling valued by their organisation<\/a> is one of the top priorities for workers. Define your vision and be clear about your expectations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey of workers worldwide found that around 50% <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/186164\/employees-don-know-expected-work.aspx#:~:text=Based%20on%20Gallup's%20work%20with,t%20really%20own%20this%20task.\">didn\u2019t know what their boss expected<\/a> of them. That\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> proportion of employees who feel insecure and underproductive in their work. So what can you do as a coach? Again \u2013 it all starts with the proper interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to communicate your expectations. How do you want projects to progress? What behaviours and working styles do you and don\u2019t you want to see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also need to get everyone behind your vision and goals. When a team is confident that everyone is pulling in the same direction, you will get there much more quickly with a clear view of the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Give feedback in a constructive and sensitive way<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback is never easy \u2013 particularly for the recipient but often for the person dishing out the pointers. Coaches need to learn a few feedback skills to ensure feedback lands gently without rubbing anyone up the wrong way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do it one-on-one and face-to-face (video call at the absolute minimum for remote teams).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start with something positive \u2013 but keep it relative. Think\u00a0 \u201cI thought the presentation\u2019s content was spot on \u2026\u201d not \u201cI like your shoes\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch your phrasing \u2013 start sentences with <em>me<\/em> rather than <em>you<\/em>; it sounds a lot less accusatory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get their take on the situation \u2013 you only get the complete picture when you understand what a person is thinking and feeling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work to find a solution together \u2013 you give them the perspective, and they develop the plan of action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Empower your team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So, once you know your employees, their skill sets and where they want their careers to go, it\u2019s time to help them put those skills into practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great way to do this is by giving each employee individual responsibility for tasks that will help them develop in their key areas, letting them take the reins on a new project or pushing them to take complete control of a sales pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to learn is by doing, and the more autonomy you can provide, the more you will demonstrate trust and confidence in your team\u2019s abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t expect anything to change overnight. Development is a process, and there may be setbacks, but let your employees know you are here to help!
