Your employees are an asset, and it\u2019s worth investing in keeping them with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"key\">Employee Retention is a Recognition Issue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get to the heart of the problem, we have decided to put together a few of the most common reasons why people leave and move on to better things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Feeling unappreciated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that 79% of people say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/better\/lifestyle\/here-s-no-1-reason-why-employees-quit-their-jobs-ncna1020031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lack of appreciation<\/a> is the number one reason why they quit? Feeling underappreciated is a massive driver for unhappiness in the workplace, but the good news is that it\u2019s something you can fix \u2013 with the right tools and mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making someone feel appreciated is more than giving them a higher salary or expensive perks. While they are both great, financial incentives are not what matters most to your employees. It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mo.work\/insights\/what-is-employee-recognition\/\">consistent recognition<\/a> that pays off. This is a huge number, especially because the companies that survived the pandemic were actively putting effort into improving <a href=\"https:\/\/mo.work\/insights\/employee-engagement-guide\/\">employee engagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engagement can be tricky because it has a lot to do with individual work styles and preferences \u2013 but that\u2019s not to say it\u2019s something you can\u2019t improve on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to pay attention to what your employees are looking for and how their values align with yours and those of your company. We all like to feel as though we\u2019re on the path to achieving our full potential. And when we can\u2019t see a path to greater fulfilment, we might start to check out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinsey\u2019s 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/great-attrition-or-great-attraction-the-choice-is-yours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Attrition Report<\/a> found that turnover is significantly less likely when employees enjoy good prospects for internal mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clear career paths and development plans combined with transparency around internal hiring and job opportunities can offer good incentives to stay put. As can making space for skills-based learning journeys, even when there\u2019s no specific role to prepare for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. A lack of company culture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To feel invested at work, employees need something to invest in. That something is a culture that promotes connection, communication, and shared values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a recognisable company culture, retention is sure to be an issue \u2013 as is hiring. <a href=\"https:\/\/about-content.glassdoor.com\/en-us\/workplace-culture-over-salary\/?_gl=1*1bcoy1u*_ga*MTQxMDA1NjI5OS4xNjYxMTY2NjU3*_ga_RC95PMVB3H*MTY2MTE2NjY1Ny4xLjAuMTY2MTE2NjY1Ny42MC4wLjA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glassdoor<\/a> found that 77% of respondents would consider a company\u2019s culture before applying for a job there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all company cultures look the same, but the best have a few things in common. Including space to experiment, strong leadership and a willingness to lead by example, strong values that are reflected in day-to-day interactions and a robust reward and recognition scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other things can help make your company a more pleasant place to work \u2013 from a funky office to fun team activities \u2013 but the human touch makes all the difference. Hybrid working might mean you need to mix things up, but there are many ways to create a thriving culture in a remote team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. A bad onboarding process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Onboarding is an essential part of welcoming a new member to the team. If the system is disorganised, dull or sporadic, it can have a negative effect that\u2019s hard to recover from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, if you get the onboarding process right, you\u2019re much more likely to have happy employees. Glassdoor found that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplegoal.com\/blog\/employee-onboarding-employee-retention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strong process<\/a> can improve new hire retention by 82%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the good news is that many tools are out there to help create a good experience for your new hires. If you have managers failing to connect with their teams, you will be fighting a losing battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/Images\/health-wellbeing-work-report-2022_tcm18-108440.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> from CIPD and Simplyhealth found that poor management styles are among the most common causes of stress at work.
